The Psychometric Entrance Test

General Info

The Psychometric Entrance Test (PET) is a tool for predicting academic performance used for screening applicants to institutions of higher education in Israel. The test is administered by the National Institute for Testing and Evaluation (NITE)
The Psychometric Entrance Test examines abilities in three domains: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and English language proficiency. The test consists of multiple-choice questions and a writing assignment that is part of the verbal reasoning domain. The assignment examines both content and language and can be written in any of the languages in which the test is offered as well as in several other languages through the English/Combined Version.

Test accommodations for applicants with special needs are offered on certain test dates. Once registered for the test, candidates can apply for special accommodations by submitting  the required documentation. Applications for special accommodations are only accepted as long as registration for the respective test date is open.

Test Languages

The Psychometric Test is offered in Arabic, French, Hebrew, Russian and combined/English (i.e., questions are written in Hebrew and English and difficult words are translated into additional languages). It is recommended that applicants take the test in the language they know best. In the English/combined version, the writing assignment can also be written in Amharic, Dutch, German, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish.
The Hebrew University takes into consideration the fact that candidates might not have a test in their own language.

Registration for the Psychometric Entrance Test is separate from application to the Hebrew University. Registration is carried out online on the NITE website.

Preparing for the Test

Surveys indicate that it is possible to benefit significantly by preparing for the test using various means of self-study. Familiarity with the different types of questions that appear on the test and using simulations may decrease anxiety and improve test performance.

Test Results

Test results can be retrieved from the NITE website, and are also emailed to candidates. They are forwarded to the academic institutions within 45 days from the test date.

Examinees receive the results of each of the three areas of the test – verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and English. The English sub-score is used to determine the candidate's English level, as detailed in the chapter on English Requirements. The total score is reported in three versions: a general score (40% verbal reasoning, 40% quantitative reasoning and 20% English); quantitative emphasis (60% quantitative reasoning, 20% verbal reasoning and 20% English); verbal emphasis (60% verbal reasoning, 20% quantitative reasoning and 20% English).

Some programs use only one type of score (general or QE- Quantitative Emphasis score) Some programs accept the higher score from the general or QE and some programs accept the VE (Verbal Emphasis Score) as well and consider the higher of all types of score.
The highest valid test scores are considered (e.g. general score of one test session and QE of another session).
