Undergraduate programs and the majority of graduate programs at the Hebrew University are taught in Hebrew, and candidates are required to submit proof of Hebrew language proficiency.

You are exempt from submitting proof of Hebrew proficiency if you:
- are applying for a Master program taught in English
- are applying for the International Bachelor's Program (offered by RIS)
- took the Psychometric test in Hebrew
- have an Israeli Bagrut from a high school where the language of instruction is Hebrew
- have passed the Behina Yerushalmit
- hold an IB Diploma with a minimum grade of 4 in Higher Level Hebrew A

The Placement Test is conducted online and can be taken only once. There is no need to register in advance. However, only candidates that have applied for studies and received a candidacy acknowledgment will be able to take the test.

The test consists of a writing assignment according to the level achieved on the Placement Test and determines the final Hebrew level.
The proficiency test is conducted online (ZOOM).
Registration will open one month before the test and will be available on the following link

- cancellation until 14 days before the test at no cost
- cancellation less than 14 days prior to the test date or non arrival - in order to register for an additional test date, the applicant will be required to pay 100 NIS.

Additional Information
Summer Ulpan
The Rothberg International School will offer a special level Dalet summer Hebrew course for undergraduate applicants. The Ulpan will take place from August 5th to September 18th, 2025. Details will be sent to eligible applicants in June.
Hebrew Exemption: The Hebrew University will only grant a degree to students who have Hebrew language exemption level (with the exception of Master's programs taught in English).
Students who have been admitted to degree studies but have not yet reached exemption level exemption (P’tor) by the Division of Hebrew Language Instruction (and did not get the required score on the YAEL test), must take Hebrew language classes in addition to their normal academic course load, in their first year of study. This should be taken into account when planning one's schedule.
Students with Hebrew level Heh will study course 25107 Hebrew for Academic Purposes 1 during the first semester and course 24108 Hebrew for Academic Purposes 2 during the second semester.
Students with Hebrew level Vav will only study course 25108 Hebrew for Academic Purposes 2.
Students may take the YAEL/YAELNET test an any stage during the first year in order to meet Hebrew requirements. Students that meet YAEL requirements during the semester, may choose to stop participating in the Ulpan class. They should notify the teacher and remember to update their second semester study plan.
